Intangible cultural heritage, including folk music, is an integral part of every nation, and it becomes even more important in times of existential military confrontation and defense of the country against aggressors. The migration of scientists and specialists, military attacks, and evacuation procedures—all of this becomes a risk threatening the destruction of historical recordings. At the same time, during military confrontation and the growth of national consciousness, individual communities and society need to turn to folk music to find “roots” that contribute to better uniting people and building a national concept. Ensuring the preservation of folk music collections while providing access to some of the recordings to the public is a challenge for researchers and archival staff, further complicated by the conditions of martial law. In the case of Ukraine, foreign partners play a significant role, as do grassroots practices that temporarily meet the needs of society. At the same time, preserving cultural heritage, which is a task of national importance, requires changes at the government level, the establishment of communication channels from grassroots practices to the top, and the adaptation of complex bureaucratic systems to meet the needs of society.     Article cover photo: Work in progress on magnetic tape archives in the archive of the Laboratory of Ethnomusicology of Music Academy in Kyiv.
