Abstract

Three mainstream Adult Contemporary (AC) stations, Radio Suomi, Radio Nova and Radio Suomipop, dominate Finland's radio market with their 50 per cent share of combined listening. The article compares the music offerings of the three stations in 2013 and 2017 by analysing the differences in their playlists, thus showing how radio stations aim at product differentiation in order to be succesful in competition. Theoretically, the article draws from theory of competition and market structure, and develops quantitative measures that can be used in the analysis of the various dimensions of radio music. The authors demonstrate that, in spite of their common music format, the three stations show distinct differences and use playlists as a tool for station profiling. Hence, the stations can not be blamed for being substitutes to each other. Quite the opposite, they don't appear to be rivals at all while targetting to different groups of listeners.
